Here's Judy as she looked in GH I and II. She's the "alternative" rock guitarist of the group, and she definitely looks the part. While she, Pandora, and Casey all seem to have the same body type (white, thin, large breasts), their styles are very distinct and different. Judy's outfit here is realistic and fun. And then we have GH III:

Judy seems to have been attacked by a bear--just look at her! Her shirt's all torn up and falling off, and you can see her bra, which is oddly pink and doesn't match her shirt at all. Maybe she just threw something on while she was trying to get away. Poor girl.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with looking sexy--it's when it's so obviously for men only that it shuts out players like me. In looks, we lose our hardass rocker and get eye candy for men instead. Combine the shredded-in-the-right-places clothing and the infuriating boob physics, Activision has basically slapped a "For Boys Only" sign on Judy.
But Judy's not letting this fashion catastrophe affect her--she can still play some badass rock. I'll continue to play Judy because she's awesome, but that doesn't mean I like what Activision did to her. I'm joining the other gaming bloggers who are calling Activision on their crap; hopefully this won't be a problem in the future.
It's so irritating because, for GH I and II, I thought to myself, "Finally! Female characters done right!"
ReplyDeleteNow it's all corsets and flailing boobs and it's all downhill from here, you guys.
...where did Pandora go? *sniff*
ReplyDeleteI've commented from about GH3 from other perspectives (Boss Battles? What?) But factors like this really highlight the change in developers.
GH1 & 2 were musical experiences that happened to be in a videogame format.
GH3 is a videogame that happens to be about music.
Hi! I'm new here and just wanted to say this blog is awesome.
ReplyDeleteAnd regarding Guitar Hero 3: Harmonix has seemingly moved onto bigger and better things, if early reviews of Rock Band are any indication. Rock Band allows you to design your own avatar, and it clearly seems to aim for the 'musical experience'. Here's hoping it turns out well.
I haven't even bothered to look at GH3, and I even bought the meagre 80's effort. It just seems to brag about its selling out. And cheaply, too. Axe body spray cha cha dancers? You'd think Guitar Hero's name would be worth more than that.
I'm sad about the loss of Pandora. I never liked Judy Nails. Casey Lynch was all right, but I didn't like Casey's finishing move. I liked that Pandora was meant to be the goth type rocker of the female characters, and now we don't have that anymore.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm disappointed that Pandora's gone, too. I always thought that it was cool that the "death metal" character was a woman--but, of course, they take her out of the game. Midori does absolutely nothing for me; in fact, she's practically the antithesis of Pandora.
